Module: Mary Eliza Rogers

Introduction

Mary Eliza Rogers (1828–1910) was a British artist. In 1855 she accompanied her brother, Edward Thomas Rogers, on his trip to Palestine. He was then in the British diplomatic service.

After returning to London in 1859, she authored her work, Domestic Life in Palestine, which was published in 1862. There she recounts her journeys in various Palestinian cities and villages, and her encounters with local residents of different sects and religions. After that, she visited Damascus, as is evident from her article “Books and Book-Binding in Syria and Palestine,” which was published in The Art Journal (1868).
