Ella Ayoub: Rogers and the Samaritans
This text about Rogers was created as part of a research project by Ella Ayoub.

During the first period of his diplomatic service in Palestine (1849-1853), Rogers showed great interest in and sympathy for the Samaritans. In 1854, he provided letters of recommendation to take the Samaritan Yaʿqūb al-Shalabī (Jacob esh Shelaby) with him to England to ask the British government for further protection of the Samaritan community. In 1855, he collected and translated the memoirs of Yaʿqūb al-Shalabī into English in the book Notices of the Modern Samaritans, Illustrated by Incidents in the Life of Jacob esh Shelaby .
